At Inboxroad, we’re committed to helping you create effective, personalised email campaigns — whether you prefer rich HTML designs or simple text messages.
Our Smart Tags and Personalisation Tags features make it easy to insert subscriber information dynamically, adding a personal touch to every campaign.
This guide will explain how to use these features in both the HTML Editor and Plain Text Editor, along with additional tracking options available in the Design Campaigns page.
Using Smart Tags in the HTML Editor
Step 1: Open the HTML Editor
When creating or editing a campaign, go to Design Email → HTML Editor.
Here you can write or paste your own HTML code to fully customise your email layout and design.

Step 2: Insert Smart Tags
To personalise your message, click anywhere in the HTML editor.
A context menu will appear, showing available Smart Tags such as:
{{first_name}}{{last_name}}{{email}}{{unsubscribe_link}}
Select a tag to insert it at your cursor position.
If text is selected, the tag replaces the selected text automatically.

Step 3: Continue Editing
After inserting a tag, simply keep writing — the menu will close when you continue typing.
Example:
<p>Hi {{first_name}},</p>
<p>We’re excited to share our latest updates with you!</p>
When sent, your recipient will see:
Hi Sarah,
We’re excited to share our latest updates with you!
Using Personalisation Tags in the Plain Text Editor
Step 1: Open the Plain Text Editor
When creating or editing a campaign, go to Design Email → Write Plain Text.
This lets you write clean, text-only emails — perfect for simple and personal messages.

Step 2: Insert Personalisation Tags
At the top of the editor, you’ll find an Insert Personalisation dropdown.
Choose from the same list of tags to add them directly into your message.
Example Message:
Hello {{first_name}} {{last_name}},
We just wanted to reach out and thank you for being part of our community.
Stay tuned — exciting updates are coming soon!
Best regards,
The Inboxroad Team
When sent, if your contact is Sample Johnson, the message will display:
Hello Sample Johnson,
We just wanted to reach out and thank you for being part of our community.
Stay tuned — exciting updates are coming soon!
Best regards,
The Inboxroad Team
Where Personalisation Data Comes From
All Smart Tags and Personalisation Tags pull values directly from your contact list — the same file you upload when creating your campaign.
For example, if your contact list includes:
| Field | Example Value |
|---|---|
| first_name | Sample |
| last_name | Johnson |
| sample.johnson@example.com |
Then:
{{first_name}}→ Sample{{last_name}}→ Johnson{{email}}→ sample.johnson@example.com
Each email will automatically include personalised information for its recipient.
Extra Field Options in the Design Campaigns Page
When setting up your campaign, you’ll find an Extra Field section under Design Email.
These settings enhance tracking and data personalisation.

1. Add Contact Fields to the Tracking Link
When enabled, Inboxroad automatically appends contact fields (e.g., email, first_name, affiliate) to your links.
This lets you:
- Track user interactions individually
- Send subscriber data to external tools
- Personalise landing page behaviour based on contact data
Each recipient gets unique tracking parameters in their links, helping you understand engagement without extra setup.
2. Activate Google Analytics Tracking
Turn this on to automatically add UTM tracking parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign) to every link in your campaign.
For example:
https://yourwebsite.com/
becomes
https://yourwebsite.com/?utm_source=inboxroad&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=your_campaign_name
This allows you to monitor campaign performance directly in Google Analytics or similar tools.
Why Use Smart Tags and Personalisation?
By using Smart Tags and Personalisation Tags, you can:
- Save time — no manual coding needed
- Avoid syntax errors
- Increase engagement with personalised content
- Track results more accurately
- Strengthen relationships with your subscribers
Even plain text emails feel more genuine when they address the recipient by name.
Example: Advanced Personalisation in Plain Text
You can use multiple custom fields to create highly dynamic content:
Hello {{first_name}} {{last_name}},
This {{month}}, we’ve introduced exciting updates for our users in {{country}}.
Your affiliate ID: {{affiliate}}
Account Code: {{ac}}
If you joined us through {{referrer}}, thank you for being part of our growing community!
Best regards,
The Inboxroad Team
